TLACHTLI, 2015

Acrylic on canvas
300 x 120 cm

Tlachtli, better known as the Mesoamerican ballgame, was a sport with ritual associations played since 1400 BC by the pre-Columbian peoples of Ancient Mesoamerica and still played today in Mexico and some countries of Central America. This version of Picasso’s Guernica studies the symbolism of this traditional game as well as Picasso’s studies for Guernica The Dream and Lie of Franco to reflect upon neocolonialism and cultural imperialism.
